Verle Guthrie

Verle Eugene Guthrie, age 79, of Highlands Ranch, Colorado and previously of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away February 22, 2023.

Verle had a 30-year career in telecommunications beginning with Northwestern Bell in Des Moines, IA until 1994, and then with U.S. West and Qwest in Denver, CO. After retiring in 2000 from Qwest, Verle worked for two companies supporting the telephone industry and retired again in 2006. Verle was a member of the CenturyLink Retirees Association.

Sherril Metzger

Sherril Aann Metzger, age 86, of Denver, Colorado, passed away February 19, 2023.

Sherril began working at the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company, later known as Mountain Bell, and later as US West. Still working for the Bell Telephone System, Sherrie moved to Southern California in the early 1960s, but returned to Denver in the early 1970s to be closer to her aging parents. Sherrie retired from US West after a thirty-year career with the company.

While working for Mountain Bell, Sherrie enjoyed participating in company bowling leagues and, especially, singing in the Mountain Bell Singers. During her time with the Singers, Sherrie showed her talents both for singing and drama, staging choral productions of many musicals in addition to adding her soprano voice to the chorus. Sherrie made many close and lasting friendships with her choir colleagues; she considered the choir her second family.

Wesley Colvin

Wesley D. Colvin, age 87, of Pueblo, Colorado, passed away Jan. 14, 2023

Wes spent several years traveling in southeast Colorado doing construction. He made supervising foreman in 1970, and moved his family to Lamar, and then moved them to Pueblo in 1977. The last four children graduated from South High School. The company was sending a lot of their employees to Colorado Springs, however Wes chose to go back to La Junta and took over three foreman jobs. He retired in 1990. Louise was cleaning telephone offices, and he helped her until 1999 when they both retired. They lived south of Swink for 30 years.

Edith Sparks

Edith Melton Sparks, age 96, of St George Utah, previously of Denver, Colorado, passed away January 28, 2023.

At 16 Beth joined the workforce as a long-distance operator for Michigan Bell. in 1950 Beth moved to Denver Colorado where she resumed her career with the Mountain Bell Telephone Company. There she advanced by serving in several positions including customer relations, accounting, and payroll operations.

In 1968 she moved from Denver to Salt Lake City and transferred to the phone company there, where she worked as a dispatcher among other positions, until her retirement. She worked in telecommunications in various capacities for a total of twenty-six years and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
